The Egyptian Academy of Scientific Research and Technology (ASRT) will launch a pilot CSP project to test units that can desalinate water while also producing electricity.
The Multipurpose Applications by Thermodynamic Solar (MATS) is a four-year project that will receive $28 million from the European Union under its Seventh Framework Program as well as investments from other European universities and companies.
The units, to be used in a desert area near Alexandria, can be powered by using solar energy and other renewable energy sources such as biomass and biogas. The test facility will aim to generate one megawatt of electrical power and 250 cubic meters of desalinated water per day.
