First Google, Now Apple Goes Green

Good public relations or the outcome of a Greenpeace-targeted campaign has resulted in Apple Inc.’s North Carolina facility being powered by solar power, green fuel cells, and other renewable energy sources. The plant uses 20 MW of power at full capacity with Apple meeting 60% of that demand via onsite energy production which will include two solar arrays. The company will later install a 5-MW biogas-powered fuel cell installation.

The 500,000-sq ft data center powers Apple’s iCloud service, and will be completely powered by renewable energy sources by 2013. The company plans to expand its greening to its data center in Newark, California and Prineville, Oregon.
