Nigeria Hopes to Capitalize on Waste Management Carbon Credits

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (Lawma) is attempting to win carbon credits for utilizing waste from landfills as a source of energy. The Authority has been pushing three major landfill sites that it has been instrumental in implementing a waste-to-energy (W2E) process: Olusosun, Abule Egba, and Solus.

Lawma, in collaboration with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), held a workshop in Lagos to explore waste management solutions that were the most cost effective for the Nigerian city. “The integrated approach therefore envisages a comprehensive system for waste prevention (through re-use and source reduction), recycling, composting, and disposal,” Lagos’ state commissioner for environment Tunji Bello said.

Lawma is trying to establish Lagos as a starting point for other Nigerian states to follow.
