As Apollo Tyres, looks to expand its business in the South African market, green manufacturing could also come with the Indian company. Onkar Kanwar, company chairman, said at Apollo’s annual general meeting that the company increased its revenues by 37% to $2.5 billion in 2011 and is growing at above local industry rates in India, Europe, and South Africa.
Kanwar said that through a “combination of the right products” and a “focus on specific categories,” the tire maker intends to further consolidate its position in each of its established home markets. One sector that the company plans to redirect a stronger focus is using renewable energy. “It is one area where the interest of our customers, the efficiency of our manufacturing processes, the effectiveness of our research and testing and the needs of society, all come together in one place,” Kanwar commented. He shared that Apollo is working on alternative sources of rubber, low noise and fuel efficient tyres, water conservation and the use of renewable sources of energy.
