Azorean Islands Gear Up for World’s First RE System

Nine Azorean islands will see the national utility, EDA, and Younicos developing the world’s first renewable energy system based upon 100% solar and wind power. The agreement will see the German company Younicos setting up and securing the funding required for the project, totaling around €25 million.

The system will include a 500-kW solar plant, wind part, battery storage, and an energy management system expected to be operational by 2014. It will provide 70% of the 13 GW of power consumed on the Graciosa island and is expected to save Portugal €1.5 million.
