The interconnection line between Ethiopia and Kenya has reached a new level with the latest financing deal struck with the African Development Bank (AfDB) to help progress the Eastern Electricity Highway Project. The financier has approved a $348-million loan for part of the financing to help transport power between the two countries.
The power line will be co-financed by the two countries, the World Bank, AfDB, and the French Agency for Development (FDA) which will include the construction of a 1,068-km HVDC, 500 kV transmission line. Converter stations will be established at Ethiopia’s Wolayta-Sodo and Kenya’s Suswa with a power capacity of up to 2 GW.
The project is scheduled to be complete in 2017.
