Solar to Improve Water Supply in Nigeria’s Bauchi State

Hajiya Hajara Wanka, Special Assistant to Governor Isa Yuguda on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), stated that the Nigerian Federal Government has released N1 billion to the state of Bauchi for the construction of 100 solar powered motorized boreholes in an effort to enhance water supply in the communities. Additionally, the Bauchi state government will contribute N200 million toward the project.

The project calls for construction of five bore holes within Bauchi’s 20 local government areas.

“The project is designed towards attaining sustainable development in water, hygiene, and sanitation services in the state,” said Wanka. Donor agencies, civil society organizations (CSO), and non-funded government organizations (NGO) will assist to ensure realization of planned project goals.

Commissioner for Rural Development, Alhaji Sale Dumba, said that the state government has also awarded a N200 million contract for the production of additional hand pumps for distribution among all areas. A mini water scheme is in the works within major towns across the states.
