South Africa to Launch Green Rating System for Buildings

The Green Building Council of South Africa (GBSA) is launching a pilot system that will rate buildings on a “green” scale. The system is based on a model out of Australia. Backing the pilot system is the South African Property Owners’ Association (Sapoa). Sapoa is urging all involved in South Africa’s property industry to express their views on the soon to be launched rating system.

GBSA’s has identified opportunities in the building industry for more environmentally friendly construction and has set a number of targets in different areas. The GBSA plans to award points for achieving these targets and providing a rating on the amount of points gained. The pilot is expected to be introduced in July.

“It will be in the industry’s long-term interest to ensure we shape the rating system through inputs across the sector,” Sapoa president Ben Kodisang said in an emailed statement. “That includes architects, engineers, consultants, building contractors, as well as property owners, developers, managers, large corporate tenants, product manufacturers and distributors, and the relevant government departments.”
