Morsi Takes Authoritarian Rule in Egypt

Egypt’s first democratically-elected president, Mohamed Morsi, made a decree on November 22 granting himself complete control including executive, legislative, and judiciary branches. The leader announced at a Cairo mosque, “I fulfil my duties to please God and the nation and I take decisions after consulting with everyone.”

The move comes just days after a visit from US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and is seen as strategic with major world leaders concerned with the escalating tensions between Israel and Palestine, including Egypt’s largest financial backer the US.

While the Supreme Judicial Council released a statement calling the president’s move “an unprecedented attack on the independence of the judiciary and its rulings,” Morsi is hoping to gain support by promising to reopen criminal investigations into ousted President Hosni Mubarak, his family, and former ministers.
