Spain’s Suspension of RE Subsidies Shed Light on Africa

Although not surprising given the economic status of Spain, the government has suspended their subsidies in January pushing investors to look elsewhere, including Africa.

Many of those same Spanish companies are looking to gain market access to South Africa’s renewable energy sector. And it isn’t just South Africa (based on its REIPPP), Spanish companies have long been interested in North Africa. The close proximity as well as already established transmission lines make places like Morocco more appealing, particularly in light of the recent drop of RE subsidies in Spain and the rise in RE legislation in Africa. Spanish companies like Aries and TSC are partnered with Saudi developer ACWA Power International which just won the award to construct the 500-MW Ouarzazate solar plant in Morocco. Other Spanish firms making their way through Africa is wind developer Gamesa and its progress in Egypt.
