A gun battle in Nigeria’s Maiduguri district between the military and the Islamist militant group Boko Haram has led to the death of 13 members of the militant group. The latest battle brings the total of people who have died from violence in the northeast of the country to 32 in the last week.
"One soldier was killed by Boko Haram while the JTF killed 13 Boko Haram," Sagir Musa, spokesman for the military Joint Task Force, said. The spokesman did not divulge how many casualties the military saw.
Musa said members of the sect had detonated a bomb at a JTF checkpoints in Maiduguri, and that all the deaths had occurred in the ensuing gun battle.
