Just when it seemed that Tunisia would lead the way with progress as it led the Arab Spring, the recent dismissal of its cabinet has left the country in political limbo; however, energy system supplier Conergy is still keen to mark its North African debut in Tunisia.
The firm won the bid for what would be the second largest solar plant in the country, standing at 210 kW, which also included a groundwater desalination plant in Ben Guardane. The plant was inaugurated in November with the construction for the solar installation underway. The solar plant is expected to be connected to the grid by April, covering 70% of the desalination plant’s energy needs.
Interestingly, Tunisia does not currently have any state subsidies like feed-in tariffs, but the government continues its strides into the renewable energy sector. The country’s long-term plans are to expand its own grid while exporting excess energy to Europe or neighboring countries.
