The world’s largest concentrated solar power (CSP) plant was officially inaugurated in Abu Dhabi adding 100 MW of solar energy to the UAE’s grid.
With enough green energy to power 20,000 homes, UAE president Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan said: “The inauguration of Shams 1 is a major milestone in our country’s economic diversification and a step toward long-term energy security.”
The project, designed and developed by Shams Power Co. (a JV between Masdar, Total, and Abengoa), will displace approximately 175,000 tons of carbon dioxide. Shams 1 incorporates the latest in parabolic trough technology and features more than 258,000 mirrors mounted on 768 tracking parabolic trough collectors.
