AfDB Hands Malawi over $3M for Power Generation

The African Development Bank (AfDB) will inject $3.04 million for the Kholombidzo Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP) feasibility studies, expected to cost a total of $3.27 million, in Malawi while the government will contribute the remainder. The grant aims to produce a full bankable feasibility study for the future development of a power generation project to contribute to the expansion of electricity generating capacity in Malawi, which would ultimately help to address electricity shortages and enable the delivery of reliable energy and electricity access expansion in Malawi.

The agreement is still awaiting the protocol signatures from the Bank and the government, expected to take place immediately. The government is in charge of getting consultants six months after the protocol has been signed. AfDB Malawi representative Andrew Mwaba told Alternative Energy Africa: “We expect the interim feasibility study report and environmental and social impact assessment reports to be delivered 10 months from the date of mobilization of the consultants, and final reports to be delivered five months thereafter.” He added that disbursements will be made according to the schedule of the deliverables to be agreed.
