Power Flows from Tanzania to Zanzibar via Interconnector

Zanzibar is due to receive about 100 MW of power thanks to the latest interconnector from Tanzania. As part of the Millennium Challenge Account Tanzania (MCA-T) Energy Project, the new 132 kV line will double the transmission capacity currently available on the existing line. Irish engineering consultancy ESB International said the project coming online was a major milestone in its role as consultant engineer to one of Africa’s largest energy projects.

In 2008, ESB International won an international competitive tender to provide energy sector consultancy services to the MCA-T. One of Tanzania’s biggest challenges is its under-developed energy infrastructure. Its electricity power supply is unreliable and only 15% of the population are connected to the national grid. The $200 million energy project, which is wholly funded by the US, aims to ensure the long-term development of power generation and transmission networks in Tanzania for future generations.
