Kenyan Sugar Company Jumps on Alternative Power Bandwagon

Kenya’s Mumias Sugar Co. is stepping into the power industry. On June 17, speaking to The Nation, the company’s CEO Evans Kidero said that Mumias would produce 38 MW at the $341 million Tana and Athi Rivers Development Authority project. The company said that 26 to 28 MW would be sent to the national grid.

Mumias has already entered into a power purchase agreement with Kenya Power & Lighting Company. The Tarda project, set to roll out over 24 months, would make Mumias one of the largest independent power producers in Kenya.

The company isn’t stopping there however and is in the process of implementing another cogeneration project which is expected to come onstream later this year, producing 35 MW. The company will also begin producing ethanol and power alcohol from its sugar cane fields.
