Angola gears up to start a new hydropower plant that will double its installed hydropower capacity. The country has contracted Voith Hydro to supply and install four generators and turbines in addition to supply control and associated systems amounting to €100 million.
The Cambambe II will bring an additional 700 MW to the grid, and will be built next to the existing facility of Cambambe I allowing the new plant to use the infrastructure and dam already available on the spot. Angola’s hydropower potential is estimated to be around 18 GW with only 4% currently developed.
President and CEO of the company, Dr. Roland Münch, said that Voith was responsible for recently finishing the modernization of the Cambambe I, increasing its output by 40%. Ethiopia’s Gibe II was also equipped by the company, helping increase the electricity capacity from 15% to 50%. And in South Africa, Voith is currently providing the complete electromechanical equipment for the pumped storage facility Ingula.
