Reports out of Egypt claim more movement against Western citizens. On May 9 outside the US embassy in Cairo, an American was stabbed after being questioned about his nationality from an unknown assailant. Two days later, the Egyptian minister of interior announced that a terror cell had been disrupted and three individuals had been detained.
The minister, Mohammed Ibrahim, said a large quantity of chemicals had been found for planned attacks in Cairo and Alexandria with the plot said to be in “its final stages.” Around 10 kg of ammonium nitrate was found in addition to computer files containing information on making bombs with a flash drive containing instructions on how to build rockets. "The interior ministry was able to direct a qualitative blow to a terrorist cell which was planning to carry out suicide attacks against vital, important and foreign establishments," Ibrahim said at a press conference.
The minister claimed that the suspects had ties to AQIM, an Al Qaeda-linked sect in Algeria, and had traveled to Iran and Pakistan for training describing them as jihadists. The arrested men deny the accusations with their lawyer telling local news source Al Ahram that the accusations were fabricated.
The US embassy in Cairo issued a statement four days after the knife attack on the American citizen saying that these attacks “serve as yet another reminder of the need to exercise good situational awareness.”
