Grand Inga Latest Construction Date Set for 2015

A year after South Africa came onboard the Grand Inga project, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) announced the launch date for construction of the first phase would be October 2015. Once complete, the Grand Inga could generate 40 GW of power, signaling a major shift toward renewable energy power generation.

There have been repeated delays for the project that was first conceived about four decades ago. And with this latest agreement, South Africa plans to take a major chunk of the electricity generated. Three consortia are competing to develop the project including China’s Sinohydro and Three Gorges Corp.; Spanish group featuring Actividades de Construccion y Servicios, Eurofinsa and AEE; and Korean/Canadian venture Daewoo-Posco-SNC Lavalin.
