Ethiopia began diverting the flow of the Blue Nile river, a tributary of the Nile, in an effort to construct the Renaissance Dam to produce 6 GW of power to the country and for export. With a price tag of around $5 billion to $6 billion, the project – upon completion – will be the largest hydrodam in Africa.
Mohamed Edrees, the Egyptian ambassador to Ethiopia, told Al Jazeera: "The main issue and the essence of the matter is the impact of the dam itself and not of this step of diverting the course of water."
There have been many issues regarding the large-scale project, mainly coming from Egypt and Sudan. Please see: “Ethiopia Claims Sudan Supports Renaissance Dam”
