CIC Energy Corp. is taking measures at its Mmamabula project to be ready for carbon capture and storage once the technology becomes available.
The coal mine and power station planned at the Botswana-based development will attempt to utilize the 2.3 billion ton coal resource that will include a new trans-border coal corridor that spans from Botswana to the west coast of Africa.
Although no set guidelines are in place for the technology, the Toronto and Botswana-based CIC will need to wait for consultants Environmental Resource Managers to study effective procedures that will identify methods that could be used in selecting future carbon storage sites.
CIC Energy spokesperson Erica Belling said the company can only look at the technology once it is commercially available, technically sound, and environmentally viable, which could be several years away.
The planned power plant design for the Mmamabula Energy Project includes the most advanced technologies to limit emissions, and the plant will be capture ready by design, said Belling.
