Hydropower Expected to Hit 1,407 GW in 2020

A new report shows hydropower moving up from 1,064 GW in 2012 to 1,407 GW in 2020 with a total investment of $75 billion. GlobalData detailed in the report that hydropower was gaining more support from various governments around the world in the form of favorable policies and incentives with small-scale hydro being one of the most widely used renewable resources in the world.

 

Hydropower accounted for about 20% of total installed renewable energy capacity in 2012 at 1,065 GW up from 858 GW in 2006. GlobalData said, “More than 60 countries use hydropower to meet more than half of their electricity needs.” The Asia-Pacific region currently accounts for 41% of all installed capacity, followed by Europe with 25%, North America with 19%, South and Central America with 12%, and the Middle East and Africa with 3%. The European hydropower market is expected to add 271 GW of installed capacity by 2020, while North America looks to install just shy of 200 GW.
