Boeing, South African Airways Fly on Biofuels

Boeing and South African Airways (SAA) signed a MoU to develop biofuels for aviation use in southern Africa. The American aerospace company began researching biofuels in the aviation industry as a cheaper solution in 2011. Boeing partnered with Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) to launch the Sustainable Biomass Consortium.

The agreement represents the first African airline that Boeing will work with to implement biofuels. Ian Cruickshank, SAA head of group environmental affairs, said: "By working with Boeing’s sustainable aviation biofuel team, which has a history of successful partnerships to move lower-carbon biofuels closer to commercialization, we will apply the best global technology to meet the unique conditions of southern Africa, diversify our energy sources and create new opportunities for the people of South Africa."
