Hydropower to Help Malawi Reach 750 MW of Power by 2015

Malawi’s Minister of Energy Ibrahim Matola said that the country will produce 750 MW of power by 2015 and more than 1 GW by 2020 at the 2nd International Power Conference held on October 22. Malawi currently produces around 287 MW although the peak demand is around 350 MW. The addition of 64 MW is expected in December with the Kapichira II hydropower plant.

“The fact that no other plant is currenlty under construction, this means that in the next four to five years  our capacity will remain at 351 megawatts. We need an energy sector investment that ensures that we increase capacity every five years,” he said.
