Plasma Gasification Technology Going to SA

Afro Energy and AAP Carbon have formed a partnership to provide the waste management industry with plasma gasification (PG) technology in South Africa to be completed within 18 to 24 months, said Afro Energy’s CEO Thulani Khanyil.

“A project of this nature contributes towards the reduction of harmful gases, thereby reducing the carbon footprint of landfill sites,” comments Khanyile.

The consortium has submitted expressions of interest to a number of municipalities in order to execute these projects, which will be a first for South Africa.

AAP Carbon’s chief technology officer Jacques Malan said there are only three plasma-based systems operating commercially in Japan, and plans for a large new plant are underway in the US.

The PG technology will need plasma torches, turbines, and refractories to construct the plant and will be imported while the civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical packages will be locally sourced and manufactured.

Khanyile said that the implementation will not only help boost employment, but will also create a number of by-products that will add to the revenue of the country.
