Ghana’s Energy Commission said that the country can achieve sustainable energy for the entire population by 2020 – 10 years earlier than the UN’s target.
The West African country launched its National Action Plan for meeting the UN Sustainable Energy for All initiatives objectives in November 2012, and currently only lags behind Cape Verde, Mauritius, and South Africa in electrification rates in sub-Saharan Africa. According to the Energy Ministry, Ghana has increased electrification substantially from 15% in 1990 to 72% at the end of 2012.
