Mobisol Bringing Solar to Rwanda

Mobisol Rwanda, Energy Development Corp. Ltd. (EDCL) and the EU are set to bring solar power to a significant number of households in Rwanda. The trio entered into a partnership that will see 49,000 households and 1,000 schools get solar energy.

The four-year program, being implemented by Mobisol in collaboration with the EDCL, a subsidiary of the Rwanda Energy Group (REG), has Rwandans acquiring subsidized solar systems.

Alex Ruzigura, the Mobisol marketing manager, said during an interview with The New Times Rwanda that the beneficiaries of the project will be able to acquire subsidized solar systems, with an option of paying for the equipment in installments for a period of over 36 months.

“The beneficiaries will pay a flat fee for three-years,” Ruzigura said in the interview, adding that the firm would verify the capacity of would-be beneficiaries.

The project’s goal is to ensure Rwandans are able to make their payments, ensuring that the project is sustainable to benefit more people in the long run.

“We will accept payments of as little as Rwf100 to ease the credit burden,” Ruzigura said, adding that beneficiaries will be able to remit their payments using mobile money transfer services.
