Kenya is getting an interesting investment partner in its renewable energy sector, Google. The internet giant revealed that it plans to acquire a 12.5% stake in Kenya’s Lake Turkana wind farm, Africa’s largest once operational.
Google’s stake will come from Danish turbine manufacturer Vestas Wind Systems. Once the deal is complete the company will be the project’s third largest investor.
The Lake Turkana investment marks Google’s second investment in Africa’s renewable energy sector, the first being a solar PV plant in South Africa in 2013.
