SA Eskom Attempts to Shore Up Electricity

South Africa’s power utility Eskom is calling for regulation in the energy sector even though great strides have already been made with its voluntary energy efficiency programs.

“There is a view that maybe it [energy efficiency] needs to be legislated, and we [Eskom] are in discussions with the Department of Minerals and Energy about that,” said Eskom demand-side management manager Monkwe Mpye.

The utility company has management plans spanning for three years including the residential, commercial, and industrial sectors with a focus in lighting and solar water heating. However, Mpye said fears loom that if implementations are not made through regulation, that South African consumers will not meet the necessary requirements to become energy efficient.
