Egypt Inaugurates Region’s Largest Wind Farm

Egypt saw the inauguration of the MENA region’s largest wind farm, the El Zayt Wind Farm. The renewable project was inaugurated by the country’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mohamed Shaker El-Markabi and the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) Executive Chairman Mohamed Salah El Sobki.

The wind farm, located on the west bank of the Gulf of Suez, will generate a much needed 200 MW of energy for the North African country.

The project was brought to fruition through the cooperation of Germany’s Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW), the European Union (EU), and the European Investment Bank (EIB). The €340-million project was funded by the European Partners; with the EU providing €30 million, KfW with a loan of €191.5 million, and the EIB loaned €50 million.
