African Leaders Negotiate Kyoto Replacement

African leaders are in the process of negotiating a replacement to the Kyoto Protocol, which becomes ineffective 2012, says Abdelkader Messahel, Algeria’s Minister for African affairs.

The UN Climate Change Conference will be held in Copenhagen at the end of next year to continue further discussions. 190 countries are trying to negotiate a replacement to the Kyoto Protocol to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The discussions will continue at a preliminary meeting to be held in Poznan, Poland beginning December 1.

The participating countries will attempt to reform and expand the CDM sector. African countries have received only about 2% of investment under the mechanism, according to Algerian Environment Minister Cherif Rahmani.
