Malawi and Mitsubishi Team Up on Hydro

EGENCO, Malawi’s state-run utility, signed an agreement with Japan’s Mitsubishi Corp. for an 18-MW electrical expansion project. Under the terms of the agreement, Mitsubishi will begin construction of a hydroelectric power station in Tedzani starting next October.

The project will last for three years, with a start-up date set for 2020.

The project received a $52-million grant from the Japanese government through the International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

"Together with Calik Energy (exclusive subcontractor), we have extensive experience, particularly in the Middle East. This is our first project in Africa and we want to succeed," said Masato Kume, a Mitsubishi executive.
