Violence Erupts After Election

Violence erupted in Kenya following the announcement of the country’s election results. According to reports out of the East African country, the police killed at least 11 people during their crackdown on protestors.

The protests revolve around incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta’s win at the polls.

The bodies of nine young men shot dead overnight in Nairobi’s Mathare slum were brought to the city morgue, a security official told Reuters, adding that the men had been killed during a police anti-looting operation.

Police also fired on protesters in neighborhoods loyal to opposition candidate RailaOdinga.

The government said that the troubles are localized and blamed them on “criminal elements”, while the opposition claims the violence is widespread and more than 100 people have been killed so far.
