Uganda Sees First PV Plant Come Online

Uganda saw its first solar PV power plant come online. The plant, located in the town of Tororo, has a capacity of 10 MW. The PV power plant was developed, constructed, and commissioned by Building Energy.

Building Energy also financed the $19.6-million project of which $14.7 million was obtained in the form of credit and the balance was invested in the form of its own financing. The German Development Bank (KfW) was the coordinator of the fund-raising operation.

A 20-year PPA was signed between the company and Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Ltd. A financing facility has also been set up by the EU-Africa Infrastructure Trust Fund to bridge the gap between the purchase price of the electricity produced and the cost of producing the energy.
