Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, the world’s oldest leader, has resigned after 37 years with a vice-grip on power. Following a coup-non coup last week by the military, the 93-yr old president has been under house arrest.
Impeachment hearings began on Wednesday but were called off when the speaker of parliament read a letter from Mugabe announcing his voluntary resignation. Parliament celebrated while celebrations broke out on streets across the country on the news of Mugabe’s resignation.
The ruling Zanu-PF party says former vice-president Emmerson Mnangagwa will succeed Mugabe. Mnangagwa was sacked by Mugabe earlier this month and he fled the country. The sacking triggered the events in the weeks that followed.
