South Africa’s National Energy Efficiency Agency (NEEA) has plans to see the further installation of solar traffic lights throughout the country for this year. In addition, South Africa has plans to include efficient street lights to be set along the FIFA 2010 World Cup traffic routes.
NEEA announced the implementation of solar-powered robots (traffic lights) in over 2,000 major intersections. The NEEA is a liaison between corporate sponsors and investors and the local authorities and municipalities.
State utility Eskom reported that it experienced a drop in electricity consumption and demand in recent months, having some fearing this would result in a decreased demand for sustainable energy.
“It has taken away some of the urgency, but not the need, because in many instances municipalities will still have to cut down their electricity demand,” South African National Energy Research Institute (Saneri) CEO Kadri Nassiep said.
