Portugal and Morocco Cost Out Transmission Lines

The construction of electricity transmission lines linking Morocco to Portugal will cost €700 million. This is the result of the preliminary results of the techno-economic studies of the infrastructure project, the full conclusions of which should be known over the next three months.

"We were able to have the first elements on the cost of this work, estimated at just over 700 million euros and the route by which the line will pass, given the maritime difficulties and reliefs," said Abderrahim El Hafidi, Morocco’s Minister of Energy.

The infrastructure of a 1,000 MW transmission capacity will allow energy exchanges between the two countries. This will be a new step towards the creation of a regional electricity market.

Jorge Seguro Sanches, Secretary General of the Portuguese Ministry of Energy, said the line will allow both countries to have cheaper energy, and sell it to other countries as well. He assured that its implementation would not require the contribution of public funds.
