Burundi Receives Funding Package for Hydropower

Burundi is on the receiving end of a $33 million finance package for its electricity sector from the World Bank. The funding was provided through the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), a member of the World Bank Group.

The funds will be used to implement a project to build two dams on the Jiji and Murembwe rivers in the south of the country.

The infrastructures will have a cumulative capacity of 49.5 MW. The project of their implementation aims in the long term, to double the electric power of the country. Its total cost is $270.4 million.

In addition to the IBRD, the project will also benefit from the support of the AfDB and the European Investment Bank.
