CCS a Priority for South Africa

The South Africa CO2 Storage Atlas, worth R2-million, is a project that will attempt to identify existing geological formations for the possible future storage of carbon dioxide. The country emits about 400-million tons of carbon dioxide a year, representing 1% of total global emissions.

The initiative is supported by state utility Eskom, PetroSA, Sasol, and the South African National Energy Research Institute (Saneri).

The project is expected to identify potential carbon storage sites by 2010, falling in line with South Africa’s commitment to stabilize emissions between 2020 and 2025.
