A Report on 2nd Algae Biofuel Summit 2009

Release

The 2nd Algae Biofuel Summit 2009 was a grand success. It was attended by Researchers, Scientists, entrepreneurs and industry delegates from over 20 Indian states and 12 countries across the globe. Indian Agriculture Research Institute was co-organizer of Algae Biofuel Summit 2009. The summit got vide support from Defence Research & Development Organization, Department of Biotechnology, Indian Council of Medical Research, Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, Govt of India, Indo-EU Chambers and large number of other global organizations. The speakers and delegates included national and international industry experts, technologists, biofuel companies, scientists, investors, oil companies, policy-makers etc. Over 50 speakers deliberated on all issues encompassing this futuristic emerging industry. It was anonymously concluded by all the global experts that algae can be the best source of biofuels on the planet that we know till date. Algae’ farming for oil is the next biggest opportunity for the Biofuel industry.

Algae, like corn, soybeans, sugar cane, Jatropha, and other plants, use photosynthesis to convert solar energy into chemical energy. They store this energy in the form of oils, carbohydrates, and proteins. The plant oil can be converted to biodiesel; hence biodiesel is a form of solar energy. The more efficient a particular plant is at converting that solar energy into chemical energy, the better it is from a biodiesel perspective, and algae are among the most photosynthetically efficient plants on earth.

One hectare algae farm on wasteland can produce over 10 to 100 times of oil as compared to any other known source of oil-crops. While a crop cycle may take from three months to three years for production, algae can start producing oil within 3-5 days & thereafter oil can be harvested on daily basis (just like milk). Algae can be grown using sea water & non-potable water on wastelands where nothing else grows. It is firmly reinforced that algae’ farming for biofuels is expected to provide a conclusive solution to food vs. fuel debate.

Growdiesel Climate Care Council has NOW announced the 3rd edition of its landmark event “Algae Biofuel Summit 2010”. It is now accepting papers from researchers and industry experts. The summit is scheduled to be held from 15th to 17th Sept. 2010 in India.

As per Mr. Atul Saxena, CEO & Founder Growdiesel Mission, the organizers of Algae Biofuel Summit 2010, this year we expect over 1,000 delegates consisting of industry experts, scientists, innovators, investors and policy makers from  across the world.

Call for Abstracts for 3rd Algae Biofuel summit 2010 is NOW open. Anchor discounted registration for speakers and industry delegates shall open shortly. In line with its policy to support small & medium entrepreneurs, Growdiesel shall be providing special discounted registration opportunities for them.

As per Mr. Saxena, we are currently working on various innovative projects in this sector. One full session at the summit is devoted to discuss the technology to convert CO2 emission to fuel using algae, non-potable water & sunlight. This session shall be extremely useful for large CO2 emitters who are also large consumer of fuel. Algae farming provide them an interesting option to recycle CO2 back to fuel & help conserve nature as well as precious money.

Another important area is treatment of waste water using algae. It is now possible to link the production of algae-based fuel with an inexpensive method of sewage treatment. Innovative projects can now be designed with three major goals: Produce large quantity of biofuels with few resources even on wasteland in a confined area, help cleanse municipal/industrial wastewater, and sequester emissions of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide.

Establishing an algae farm by integrating it with other energy farming technologies is the theme of this year’s summit. As per Mr. Saxena, companies all over the world are talking of commercialization of algae biofuels within five to ten years. However we are working with a different approach & wish to commercialize this important technology within this year.

Growdiesel Mission is establishing world’s first commercial scale Integrated Biofuel Farm in India with the support of Ministry of New & Renewable Energy Govt. of India.
