ACAL Energy, the developer of affordable and reliable Fuel Cell Engines based on platinum free FlowCath® technology, announced today the appointment of Dr. J. Byron McCormick to its Board of Directors. Byron is well known in the automotive industry, bringing with him 35 years of basic research, product development, manufacturing and operations experience, the last 25 years of which have been in advanced automotive systems, electric vehicle propulsion systems, fuel cells and hydrogen. Most recently he was Executive Director of General Motors’ fuel cell car development team, which at one time comprised up to 1,500 engineers, technicians and support staff. He has also been a member of the US Energy Department’s Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technical Advisory Committee.
Byron was a significant contributor to GM’s development of the EV-1, the first mass-produced electric battery passenger vehicle, and has an unmatched understanding of the issues and market potential of both fuel cell and battery car technologies, fields in which he is recognized as one of the leading experts. He remains a strong advocate of both technologies, but believes that fuel cell automobiles are the most likely to offer the right levels of cost, performance and convenience to compete with gasoline and diesel powered engines.
Byron will join the Board of ACAL as the Carbon Trust Investments’ appointed non-executive director, and will also serve as a technical and business consultant to the Company. He will work closely with the CEO and the technical team to assist in target setting, providing technical guidance and reviewing progress to ensure that technology development meets both near-term stationary power and longer-term automotive market needs.
“We are delighted and very fortunate to have Byron join our team”, says Dr. SB Cha, CEO of ACAL Energy. “Byron’s professional achievements and his conviction in the substantial role of fuel cells in the future energy mosaic make him the ideal counsel to myself and the Company. With Byron’s guidance, I am more confident than ever that our technology will deliver fuel cell engines that are as low cost and reliable as conventional combustion engines.”
ACAL Energy’s FlowCath® technology replaces up to 90% of the platinum catalyst in a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell with a low cost, durable liquid chemical. The Company has recently announced several important technical milestones in power levels and run times. A model hydrogen fuel cell system was shown at Japan’s FC EXPO in March.
