Greenpeace launched Africa’s first solar-powered radio station in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Hundreds of residents in Oshwe gathered at the opening ceremony where the community chose solar power to combat unreliable power generation.
Loan Tran Thanh, Greenpeace’s DRC Country Manager said this was "a perfect example of the renewable energy opportunities that are a solution for communities like this."
The antenna of the radio is able to transmit air waves up to 100 km from the station. The project had 12 volunteers from SUNiversity to train in order to perform maintenance on the solar installation.
