The Africa Foundation for Sustainable Development (AFSD) is trying to stimulate investment and create direct and indirect jobs in mining communities.
AFSD CEO Harvey Keown says: “The only sustainable solution to the very real challenges in the industry is an honest approach to people, the planet, and profit – the three pillars used to measure the economic, ecological, and social success of an organization.” He said that the AFSD approach could triple bottom line imperatives while guaranteeing a potential 30% cost savings upfront, bolstered by additional cost savings over the duration of a project.
The AFSD approach entails a step-by-step process that is designed to be project specific, while focusing on key, sustainability and impact factors, including climate change, renewable energy, asset rehabilitation, water improvement, and land management.
