Algeria has joined the group of missing flights as its aircraft disappeared from radar early July 24 over northern Mali amid thunderstorms. Carrying 116 people from Burkina Fast to Algiers, air navigation services lost track of the MD-83 around 1:55 am, according to Algerian news service APS.
The passenger list includes 51 French nationals, 27 from Burkina Faso, eight Lebanese, six Algerians, five Canadians, four Germans, two people from Luxembourg, and one each from Switzerland, Belgium, Egypt, Ukraine, Nigeria, Cameroon, and Mali with six Spanish crew members.
Although Mali has suffered from Islamic militants, a senior French official said it was unlikely that the insurgents had the weapons to take down an aircraft. "In keeping with procedures, Air Algerie has launched its emergency plan," APS quoted the airline as saying.
