Algerian Energy Minister Mohamed Arkab has said that Algeria will participate in the Desertec initiative, a scheme which will transport North African renewable power to Europe. Arkab confirmed that this country will soon sign an agreement to join this German-led project.
“The signing of the final contract is lagging behind because of the exceptional situation in which the world finds itself after the occurrence of COVID-19,” said the minister. “Negotiations are nevertheless continuing normally by videoconference and if necessary, the final agreement will also be signed through the virtual channel.”
Earlier, and following a productive meeting in Berlin with the delegation of Sonelgaz, led by Mr. Boulakhras, on the occasion of the 11th Dii Desert Energy Leadership Summit, it was mutually agreed to strengthen the cooperation between the two organizations. The teams met again in Frankfurt to formalize the adhesion of Sonelgaz as Associated Partner and finalize the MOU, which will enable the energy transition in Algeria by leveraging Dii’s network.
