A recent statement by Algeria’s state press agency APS revealed the country is aiming to double its renewable energy target. The government has targeted 25 GW of renewable energy to be achieved by 2030. Toward achieving this goal the North African country plans to install 13.5 GW of solar PV capacity by the target date. Other than solar PV, Algeria plans to invest in around 5 GW of wind energy and another 2 GW of concentrated solar power (CSP). Algeria’s president, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, highlighted the need to make not only its hydrocarbon sector productive but its renewable energy sector as well. “Oil, conventional and shale gas as well as renewable energies are gifts from God. We have to fructify them and profit from them, for us and for future generations, while scrupulously ensuring the protection of the population, health and the environment,” stated the Head of State in a message.
