Another African Green City Could Crop up in Nigeria

Following behind Ghana’s recent announcement to house Africa’s first carbon neutral green city, Nigeria has now declared that its capital city, Abuja, will attempt to ‘greenify’ itself with plans to move forward reportedly in the works.

Dubbed Abuja Green City, the first phase will cover 20 sq km with fossil fuel-driven transportation set to become obsolete. The National Coordinator for Renewable Energy Programs in the Federal Ministry of Environment Bahijahtu Abubakar said that the project will be undertaken in phases with the first phase to be completed in three years. “Investors are already queuing up, and the first company is actually waiting in the wings to start,” she added.

Meanwhile, the Environment Ministry is working with 10 states in northern Nigeria on an integrated biomass project. And investors are lining up with Aura Bio Corp. announcing in June that its partner company, Tolao Energy Nigeria, was attempting to secure $10 million and is in ongoing discussions with Nigeria’s central bank to help finance biofuel projects. Last September Nigeria announced that it was looking to partner with Brazil in order to implement reforms in the energy sector.
