This year’s Ashden Awards, announced in London on May 22, has selected three African companies as finalist.
Two out of the three firms come from Tanzania including another pay-as-you-go solar company, Off.Grid Electric, is among the finalists bringing the technology to rural Tanzania incorporated with mobile money at an affordable price. SimGas is manufacturing and selling easy-to-install biogas plants that uses animal waste as its feedstock. The plants are factory-produced and made of plastic and the company has just rolled out the largest plastic injection moulding machine in East Africa to further its roll-out.
The next finalist comes from Burkina Faso. Kr Architecture designs school buildings in the country that are naturally cooled, removing the need for air conditioning. Creator Francis Kr began his project in his home village’s primary school using local materials. The school’s ventilated roof and other design features provided a much cooler environment for children to study.
Sarah Butler-Sloss, Ashden Founder and Director, said: "Africa is bursting with sustainable energy creativity: from using mobile banking to increase access to solar power, to building naturally cooled public buildings.”
