Chinese construction and engineering giant Sinohydro has awarded a turnkey EPC contract to Asonha Energie for the 35-MW Kinguélé Aval hydroelectric dam project. The project, located on the Mbei river, will generate 205 GWh of clean energy annually.
Construction is expected to begin by the end of this year and will boost local employment opportunities with an estimated 700 jobs. Project completion is slated for 2023.
The project is being undertaken as a joint venture between the Gabonese Strategic Investment Fund (FGIS) and the Meridiam Fund while Asonha Energie represents the first Independent Power Producer in the country.
“The mission of FGIS is to be the catalyst for a structural and lasting transformation of the economy of our country, in particular in the context of economic recovery resulting from the COVID-19 crisis,” said Akim Mohamed Daouda, Director-General of FGIS. “By investing in key sectors such as health, education and energy, we wish to contribute to the wellbeing of the Gabonese population. Kinguélé Aval is the first in a long series of structured and innovative projects that will participate in the growth and economic and social development of Gabon and improve access to clean energy for all.”
