Bahamian Woes toward Renewable Energy

The Bahamas Electricity Corp. (BEC) decided to abruptly cancel its renewable energy Request for Proposal (RfP) tender that was launched in 2008-2009, much to the dismay for interested parties like Canada’s Schneider Power.

Schneider Power had been shortlisted with its proposal to supply the island-nation’s grid with 14 MW of electricity via wind power. Instead the BEC opted to sign an agreement with Ocean Thermal Energy Corp. (OTEC) stating that a study had shown that renewable energy could not be integrated into the national grid. Schneider Power’s president Thomas Schneider told Tribune Business, “When developing countries in southern Africa and Kenya can integrate renewable energy into their grid, you cannot tell me that it isn’t possible in the Bahamas.”

Schneider Power had partnered with a Bahamian firm creating Eleuthera Wind Power, which would supply energy for an osmosis plant. Although the RfP has been omitted, the company continues to work on the osmosis plant as well as a $2-million wind power project.
